Overview
The BA in Psychotherapy Studies is a three-year course of studies offered as an evening-time programme. The programme offers an insight into the theory, practice and history of psychotherapy, along with a thorough grounding in the philosophy of the mind. The course is primarily informed by psychoanalysis, which provides the bedrock upon which all modern approaches to psychotherapy and all ‘talking therapies’ ultimately depend.
Each year of the programme is divided into three main streams – Psychoanalysis, Psychotherapy, and Philosophy. This course provides an excellent foundation in psychotherapeutic and psychoanalytic theory, an understanding of psychotherapeutic practice, and a firm grounding in the philosophy of the self and of the mind.
Students are required to attend lectures each week over a 24 week academic year. These lectures are supported by review material which will be discussed both in during the lectures and in smaller tutorial groups where students are encouraged to participate in a discussion of course material. Students will be provided with printed lecture notes and other material, which will also be available on the College’s intranet, in order to facilitate greater debate and discussion during the seminars and lectures.
Course Start Date
The next intake for undergraduate students is in September 2010

What We Offer
This course will be of particular interest to those who are intrigued by questions about how the mind works and are interested in exploring these questions in a structured academic manner. The aim of the course is to provide a foundation in the knowledge and understanding that underpins psychotherapy. The course focuses on learning about what motivates people and how and why people’s interests and motivations sometimes veer away from the norm and can lead them into difficulties.
Successful completion of the B.A. programme will allow the student to progress onto the clinical M.A. in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.
