Overview
The Certificate in Counselling and Psychotherapeutic Studies is a response to the continued growth of interest in this area. The course is designed to be an attractive, relevant, accessible and practical introduction to counselling and psychotherapy.
This Level 7 Certificate programme is designed to stand alone as an introduction to the field of counselling and psychotherapy and to provide a foundation that will allow the student to progress to the existing Level 8 programme in Psychotherapeutic Studies in Independent Colleges or another similar programme. The programme may be viewed as one element in an ongoing training programme in Counselling and Psychotherapy at Independent College that includes both Level 8 (B.A and H.Dip.) and Level 9 (M.A) components.
The course is arranged in three modules.
The Psychology Module covers such areas as Lifespan and Human Development and Understanding Abnormal Behaviour. The Counselling Module addresses Personal Evaluation and Change, Counselling Relationship Skills, and Family Structures. The Psychotherapy Module deals with Psychotherapeutic Theories, Understanding Human Experience and Existential Issues.

The course will be delivered on Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6.00 till 9.15pm and one Saturday per month during the academic year.

What We Offer
This course will be of particular interest to those who are intrigued by questions about how the mind works, how people interact and relate to each other, and how and why people experience difficulties in their lives. The aim of the course is to provide a basic foundation in the knowledge and understanding of counselling and psychotherapy.
Successful completion of the Certificate in Counselling and Psychotherapeutic Studies will allow the student to begin the journey that may, upon completing further study, eventually lead to qualification as a counsellor or psychotherapist.
Requirements
Entry to the Certificate in Counselling and Psychotherapeutic Studies is confined to mature students over the age of 21 years on or before January 1st of the year of admission onto the programme. Some previous experience of Personal Therapy/Personal Development Programmes/Group-work is desirable but not essential. Prospective students will be required to complete a personal statement detailing the following:
1. Their reasons for wanting to apply for the course
2. Their previous experience (if any) of counselling
3. Other experiences or life events which the students feel may be relevant
