Overview
Certificate in Counselling and Psychotherapy Studies (Level 6, final QQI approval pending)
The Certificate in Counselling and Psychotherapy Studies is a response to the continued growth of interest in this area. The course is designed to be an attractive, relevant, accessible and practical introduction to counselling and psychotherapy. The programme syllabus includes a broad introduction to Developmental Psychology, Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy, Family Therapy, Counselling Skills and Personal Development, Applied Psychotherapy, Intro to Philosophy and CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy). This Level 6 Certificate programme is designed to stand alone as an introduction to the field of counselling and psychotherapy and to provide an excellent foundation that will allow the student to progress onto further studies. It also constitutes Year 1 of the BA in Counselling and Psychotherapy Studies programme and students who are successful may move onto Year 2 of the BA. The programme may be viewed as one element in an ongoing training programme in Counselling and Psychotherapy at Independent College that includes both Level 8 (B.A and H.Dip.) and Level 9 (M.A) components.

What We Offer
This course will be of particular interest to those who are intrigued by questions about how the mind works, how people interact and relate to each other, and how and why people experience difficulties in their lives. The aim of the course is to provide a basic foundation in the knowledge and understanding of counselling and psychotherapy.
Successful completion of the Certificate in Counselling and Psychotherapeutic Studies will allow the student to begin the journey that may, upon completing further study, eventually lead to qualification as a counsellor or psychotherapist.
Requirements
Entry to the Certificate in Counselling and Psychotherapy Studies is confined to mature students over the age of 23 years on or before January 1st of the year of admission onto the programme. As well as a good Leaving Certificate or A Level history, some previous experience of Personal Therapy/Personal Development Programmes/Group-work is desirable but not essential. In addition to completing the application form, prospective students will be required to complete a personal statement of no more than 500 words detailing the following:
Personal Statement
1. Their reasons for wanting to apply for the course
2. Their previous experience (if any) of counselling
3. Other experiences or life events which the students feel may be relevant.
Applicants must attend for an interview with the Programme Head.
