The Wine Appreciation Master Class and tasting tour guided by Raymond Blake, Wine editor of Food and Wine Magazine, and Tomás Clancy, Wine correspondent for The Sunday Business Post, will cover everything you want or need to know about the wines of Spain and Portugal. On June 8th, this intensive one day course will bring you on a journey to find the story behind some of the most exciting and successful wine regions in the world.

The next master class will cover:

Spain & Portugal, Saturday June 8th

In terms of food and wine, Spain can hardly put a foot wrong right now. Her vineyards are alive with excitement and innovation and the era of tired old soupy reds and oxidised whites is well and truly over. Rioja is on a roll, as are Ribera del Duero and Penedes. And the whites from the north-west, or ‘green’ Spain, are some of the most refreshing in the world. Not to mention Sherry. After decades in the doldrums, Sherry is finally shaking off its frumpy image and the best examples represent some of the very best wine value to be had on this planet today.

In wine terms, Portugal’s great claim to fame is the huge variety of indigenous grape varieties at her winemakers’ disposal. Only recently, however, have they started to harness this potential. Portugal is still unfashionable and could never be described as middle of the road. Hence her wines offer great value to the consumer who is prepared to explore a little. In addition there is Port, one of the world’s greatest wines. It is produced in the spectacular Douro Valley, where a significant quantity of excellent table wine is now also being produced.

Join Raymond Blake, Wine Editor of Food and Wine magazine and Tomas Clancy, Wine Correspondent of The Sunday Business Post as they take you on a journey that explores the vinous riches of the Iberian Peninsula. It is a tale packed with history and culture, a tale well worth learning about.

Cost: €65 for 1 person

          €100 for 2 people

You’ll also get €50 off the cost of the 12-week Diploma in Wine & Wine culture at Independent College Dublin if you decide to indulge your wine interests further.

Course timetables

Morning session: 11.00am – 1.00pm

Afternoon session: 2.00pm – 4.00pm

Dr. Eve Watson our Head of Psychotherapy Programmes and a Senior Lecturer in the Arts and Psychotherapy Faculty gave a talk at Fordham University, New York which was held on Friday, April 26th and it was organised by the U.S.-based A.P.W. (Affiliated Psychoanalytic Workgroups). There were attendees from all over the U.S.A. (New York, Boston, San Francisco, Pittsburgh) as well as from the U.K., Australia, France, Ireland, Canada and Iceland. Dr. Eve Watson’s talk examined what it is about Beckett that makes us laugh out loud at his work. Taking the play Happy Days, the talk shows how the ability to self-deprecate, to laugh at oneself, has the effect of sustaining people in the face of misery and despair. Beckett’s treatment of the character Winnie in Happy Days is a portrayal of loneliness, aging and unrequited love that we can identify without becoming depressed by it because it is Beckett’s genius to use humour as an envelope for the unbearable.
